Behind The Bar…

A bar can be a great storage solution from hiding everything, to shaking something up and making the perfect cocktail.

Before we get into it, pull up a stool, picture your favourite beverage in hand and imagine the aroma of fresh citrus & herbs.

Want to design a bar that is functional and will leave an impression? Here are our top tips:

 Location
The location of the bar in your home is important. Consider the entertainment value, will you be using the space to host guests as you relax and enjoy a beverage?  If designing a dry bar, is it easily accessible from your working kitchen?

 Function & Purpose

  • Are you designing a dry bar without a sink? Or a wet bar fitted with a sink and appliances?

  • What items will you be storing in the bar? Will these be on display, concealed in cabinets or a mixture of both. Things to consider storing are glassware, utensils, cocktail books, garnishes such as fruits, spices and herbs, and of course…wine & liquor bottles.

  • When designing the storage there are many different options, for example you can display glassware on open shelves, or hide in cabinets for a minimal look.

  • Working space is important, particularly if you are designing a wet bar. Consider a place for your prep area and the location of your sink and refrigeration.

  • Is the bar area to be on display all the time, or concealed with pocket doors when not in use.

Materials
A bar is great piece of design to showcase your personality and make an impression. However it is important to use materials that tie in with your colour scheme and style for the rest of the house.

Panels

  • Mix and match materials, as well as selecting durable finishes and products.

  • Glass doors have always been a classic, opaque glass and fluted glass are bringing that extra diversity we love. The look of semi seeing what is behind those doors creates dynamic, playful shadows, and style, we love it!

  • Framed doors are available in many different finishes, anodised, powder coated, polyurethane or laminate. Different finishes give a different level of luxe and oomph.

Accents & Lighting

  • Metal details can be used as a feature through accents, handles or tapware.

  • Lighting can really enhance the space and set the mood, consider strip lighting or overhead lighting to create that ambience. Ensure you allow for provisions at the very beginning.

Benchtop & Feature Dropdowns

  • We recommend limestone, quartzine and porcelain for durability.

  • If you are looking for something luxurious, quartzine can be featured with lighting to really set the mood and feel of the space.

  • These materials can be used as a stone feature dropdown to create a visually stunning statement, it will be a talking point for sure!

Mirror

  • Adding mirror to the back of cabinets with glass doors is a great way to make the space feel brigher, more open, and create intersting reflections. Mirror is also a great accent to use when combining with other materials.

 Appliances & Accessories

  • Sommelier drawers contain essential equipment for any wine cognisor. These drawers have the flexibility to be used on their own, or partnered with a wine fridge.

  • Consider a single bowl sink for prepping and cleaning

  • Wine coolers and bar fridges are essential for these spaces, when designing ensure you have allowed for the correct provisions as this can be a costly error to rectify.

  • Ice well for keeping your beverages cool and on the go!

  • Consider an ice maker (a luxury item but practical, something you will appreciate when you pour that whiskey or whip up a frozen daiquiri).

  • We are big fans of the Abey Canale Preparation Island accessory (which you can use part for an ice well).

This is a space where you can have a lot of fun designing, that will create a buzzing atmosphere whilst relaxing with your guests and enjoying a beverage or few!
